When I was young, my grandma used to take photos of me and my siblings and cousins with a Polaroid camera. I loved watching the image come slowly into focus and being able to take memories home with me from my grandma’s house.

I think that is where my fascination with photography began. My grandmother also use to buy me 110 film and get it developed for me after I finished a roll. I don’t have any of the photos I took on the 110 but that was the start for me.

When I was about 10 my father let me use his father’s Pentax 35mm SLR which I learned to shoot on. Below is a photo taken with that Pentax when I was in college.

Today’s Bloganuary prompt is “What brings you joy in life?” an my answer is photography.

Photography has brought me a lot of joy over the years and I hope it has also brought joy to those who have had a chance to see my photography. It is that connection between the person behind the lens and the subject that makes it enjoyable.

Photographers have a special gift of seeing a scene that captures their interest and then making that scene stop forever on film or a memory card. I have some of my images online at images.mcallisteridealab.com for people to see and order prints if they like.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the past 10 years in the Japanese Alps.
