A new chapter begins for Ezekiel – Junior High

Yesterday was a special day for us as a family – we celebrated the beginning of a new chapter in Ezekiel’s life. A few weeks ago we were not sure if it would be possible due to the continued spread of the novel coronavirus but our school which I think is the smallest in Matsumoto was able to hold a modified entrance ceremony for the 5 elementary students and 1 junior high student (Ezekiel).

Hannah and I had been planning to both dress in traditional Japanese kimono for Ezekiel’s graduation but with all the schedule changes and having the kids home for an extended spring break that didn’t work out. But a local friend heard that we wanted to try kimono at the graduation and offered to help Hannah dress for the entrance ceremony and we took her up on it. So Hannah was able to wear a kimono for this special day. Thank you, Masako for your support on this special day.

The principal of the school gave a nice speech to the incoming students and challenged them to work hard on two things.

  1. Come to school with your best smile, a smile can bring a lot of joy to people and we want to spread joy at our school.
  2. Be safe when traveling to and from school.

And he gave Ezekiel a 3rd challenge – learn to think and act on your own, become independent. Although it is sad to think of our kids growing up and leaving home to start their own lives, independence is the goal. I want my children to grow up and move out on their own, go experience new things and find a path that honors The Lord and serves people.

Above are photos from 6 years ago and yesterday. From Ezekiel’s elementary school and junior high school entrance days. It feels like it was last week that he started school.
