Fear vs. Risk

Today’s Bloganuary prompt is “How are you brave?“.

When I read this prompt the first thing that came to my mind was something I learned from years of mountain biking, snowboarding, and skateboarding. A lot of people think that action sports are risky and are better enjoyed on a TV screen or at the X-Games.

I’m afraid I have to disagree. Some people might say you need to learn to “conquer your fears” or something along those lines, but I think that learning to manage risk is way more practical… and fun.

The TED talk by Chris Hadfield titled “What I learned from going blind in space” communicates this point better than I can so I will link to it here.

But to answer today’s prompt, I will say I think I am brave or I have courage not because I don’t get scared, it’s because I try to choose what to be afraid of. To say it another way, I pay attention to what is a real risk to my well-being and find ways to mitigate real risk.
