Presents and gifts

Presents are a dime a dozen these days and most of them are probably found on Amazon.com.

Presents are funny things. One of the funny things about them is that a lot of the time they are not needed and may not even be wanted. Yet people keep buying presents. Presents for dads and presents for moms presents for secretaries and presents for the guy who walks your dog. There is a potential present for potentially everyone, everywhere.

Yet, even with all that giving, I bet you would be hard pressed to find someone who had received a gift. Someone who because of the item they received would feel important, would know someone thought long and hard about them before choosing what to buy, would know ultimately that they were loved.

How special can someone possibly feel getting the latest iPhone? They may feel happy, they may feel privileged, they may for a moment feel better than someone else but that still doesn’t make it a gift.

I hope we all keep giving gifts to the people who are important to us. And I think it may require us to stop giving so many presents.
