Knowledgeable is not the goal

People like being in the know. People like it so much that they use knowing more of something or knowing something before others as power. They think it gives them some kind of credibility but it’s not true.

Knowledge is important and we should never stop learning. But have you ever said “that person is very knowledgeable, let’s hire them” or “they are so knowledgeable, I am sure we can trust them”? I would guess you have never thought of saying either of those things.

Curiosity, on the other hand, is a quality worth mentioning. If you find someone who is genuinely curious, they can captivate you with a single thought. Why? Simply because they are engaged with the matter.

Genuine curiosity usually says a lot about someone’s personal character. Some things it says are.

  • They are eager to learn
  • They go looking for a challenge
  • They see possibility in everything
  • They always find a solution

If you want to engage your team and help them grow, start with curiosity. A simple thing you can do to light this fire is this. Stop telling people your answers and start asking more questions. Be the leader who openly admits not having a very good answer while asking people to join you in finding a better one.
